This is just a shot in the dark especially as I don't know exactly what errors you are receiving.
Do not forget that all of the major built-in apps were replaced along about OS5 - Address Book became Contacts, ToDo became Tasks, Memos - while retaining the basic application name - has a new database format, and Date Book became Calendar. If your app which works under OS5 is presumably reading icons from these "new" applications, it will need to read from the older applications when run on a pre-OS5 device. I'm not certain, by the way, about the exact changeover point. Was it 5.0, 5.1, 4.x? Did all the applications change at the same time, or was the change spread out over a few OS releases? As I said, I am not certain and do not have the time or inclination to do the research.
