how do you know what kind of device you are using. for example if I'm
using a TX what is it, a 68k, an ARM, or some other great little hidden
name?
I need to know so I can select the right compiler/OS to program in...

I find it more helpful to think in terms of the OS Version.
For a first app I would stick with the traditional 68K style
that covered OS versions before 5 and should work with any
device. After you get more familiar with the OS, you'll probably
have figured out when you need to worry about devices.
