Is there any reason that you couldn't do it the other way around (reinstall and uninstall), assuming you turned off collision-protection? Should the new package over-write the old one, and then the install would do nothing since it would detect modified files? Unless it looks at MD5s of course - those might match up. I'd just as soon not take down the webserver. I guess I can do that in my case, but for other packages this wouldn't be a great solution. I am using the prelink-workaround plugin - not sure if that has an impact on the modified-file-protection (maybe the binaries would get deleted with the plugin - or maybe not).
