I think you need to start by clarifying: * What combinations of flags work and do not work with Portage (with otherwise identical configuration). * What combinations of flags work and do not work with Paludis (with otherwise identical configuration). * Whether the failure combinations that occur with Portage happen on a purely Portage system that's otherwise identically configured. -- Ciaran McCreesh
