First character:
  <       We unlink()ed a file before merging over it
  =       We used the existing filesystem entry
  >       Nothing special

Second character:
  ^       This file was installed by rename()ing a parent directory
  -       This file was installed by rename()
  >       Nothing special

Third character:
  ~       We fixed ownership on this file
  *       This file has special mode bits
  >       Nothing special

Those symbols are useful for us when debugging or benchmarking. For end
users they're not very relevant.
