I use paludis on my main system and preserve portage for Gentoo development (repoman and ebuild). You just tell paludis to use 'portage' group for distfiles and you're done. For exherbo I'm use 'paludis --install' directly. Both ways are pretty easy. Regards, -- Santiago M.
