Ciaran,
  OK, I finally figured out what slot. However, paludis seems to
prefer the gentoo repository version over my unpackaged version:

* sys-kernel/gentoo-sources::gentoo (previously ::unpackaged)
:2.6.26-r1 [N 2.6.26-r1] <target>
    "Full sources including the Gentoo patchset for the 2.6 kernel tree"
    -build -symlink
    86.42 kBytes to download
    * virtual/linux-sources::virtuals (for
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r1:2.6.26-r1::gentoo) :2.6.26-r1
[provided 2.6.26-r1 (for sys-kernel/gentoo-sources:2.6.26-r1::gentoo)]
    * virtual/alsa::virtuals (for
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r1:2.6.26-r1::gentoo) :2.6.26-r1
[provided 2.6.26-r1 (for sys-kernel/gentoo-sources:2.6.26-r1::gentoo)]

I am not really good at parsing this output yet (can only find docs on
paludis cmd line params, not output). What is paludis trying to tell
me here about why it will install over unpackaged, and how can I
convince paludis otherwise?

Thanks for your help so far,

Dave
