Hah!  It's back, but the assertion was hit in some different part of pan's
code this time.  I spent a couple hours fiddling with gdb and recompiling
cairo with ggdb3 and no-optimization flags, and I still couldn't get the
breakpoint in the right spot to generate a useful backtrace.

So I deleted the assertion from cairo's code, and now pan works perfectly.
Some times you just need to be, well, assertive :)

If pan starts segfaulting at least I have a better chance of finding the
cause.  Hrmpf!
