Shouldn't the build process honor the LINGUAS var? (I use LINGUAS=en 
here, disabling it for some stuff, but I do get a protest from some 
builds as well.  binutils, for instance, says something like "Sorry, 
binutils does not support LINGUAS=en", but I believe it disables building 
all of them that way, defaulting to standard POSIX:C locale, which is my 
intent.)  Or possibly setting LC_ALL=C or the like?

I've obviously not yet seen if I have the same problem right now, due to 
the earlier-in-the-process issue I was having with automake, but I should 
be able to confirm one way or the other in awhile...
