So it WAS the Gnome AT thing!  I figured it was, once you said you had it 
running.  I didn't know how, but I couldn't figure out what else it could 
be, and I knew how badly others said it affected them.

Thanks for the update, and glad I thought to mention that, now.  I was 
beginning to wonder...
