Have you tried refreshing the group list (after removing the server which 
I guess you already did)?  It's under group menu > refresh group list.

I think some of the newsrc and newsgroups.* updates only happen when 
updating the group list, but I'm not sure if that applies to server 
removal related updates or not.  Worth a try!
