My personal freeware alternative is Paint.NET. I used GIMP exclusively for about a year, but went back to Photoshop for various reasons. I get a laptop from work, but if I want to install my own software, I have to relinquish ownership to the company..I'm not gonna do that when I spent a couple thousand bucks for the CS3 suite...So I looked for an alternative that would get me a good start while at work so I could later take it home and finish in Photoshop. I found Paint.NET and highly recommend it. It by no means replaces Photoshop or GIMP at this time, but it's a fantastic start, and the software team is working really hard to turn it into a real solution.
Thanks for the heads-up on Artweaver, though...It's changed a lot since I last checked it out. I'll be testing it out for the next few weeks, now.
