I'm closing in on finishing a diorama of the delivery of a couple of Sopwith Gunbuses. OK, maybe closing in is too strong, but probably within a month or so.
We have had discussions before about scale, and how sometimes one must be not to scale in order to look right. This is one of those times. I have done all the rigging on this big old biplane with some very fine steel gray thread, made for tying flies. It is no doubt closer to scale size than ordinary thread would be, but dang--it sure is hard to see! I find myself wishing I had used a heavier thread that would show better. And yet--looking at old photos of these flying bundles of wood, wire, and fabric, I find that I cannot often see the rigging on them either. Decisions, decisions. Do I want to be scale, or do I want you to see all that work? I must go back again to Gunnar's website (http://www.bildrum.se/) and reread his thoughts on scale appearance.
