Hello, Everybody!

As most readers of this message board are aware, last weekend members
of the Southern California Paper Modelers' Conspiracy (Mike and Demi
Hungerford, plus Yours Truly) had a display table at a San Diego
science fiction convention. During Conjecture I talked to a fellow
member of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society and the Orange
County Science Fiction Club. His local library was hosting a space-
related family event the following Friday, with the Orange County
Astronomers club offering telescope viewings. He mentioned my paper
models, and the librarians were very interested in seeing them.

So, this past Friday night I dropped by the Hunt branch of the
Fullerton Public Library to see what was happening. My friend was
there, and he introduced me to the library staff. Before long, most
of my science fiction models were in a display case for the month of
October, and I made a verbal commitment to demonstrate paper model
building at the Fullerton main library on Monday night. Setting up
the display case attracted a lot of attention from children and
adults, which partially made up for the cancelled star-watching (yes,
it really DOES rain in Southern California!). It was fortunate that
my science fiction and space models were all in one box after
Conjecture.

This was a great opportunity to advance the paper model hobby, so I
couldn't pass up the chance. However, this does mean I probably won't
finish my current project before the IPMS/USA OrangeCon regional model
contest this coming Saturday. Oh, well -- I can always enter some of
my older models.

So here's my suggestion for those who wish to publicize our wonderful
hobby -- take a good look at your local library's young reader
programs and monthly events. If there's a theme that could relate to
paper model subjects, you might want to offer the librarian
appropriate "decorations" for their display cases. If the model is
available on the Internet, a small sign with the web address, helpful
beginner tips and a couple more recommended links would be ideal.

Good luck in spreading the word around! Long live the Paper Modelers'
Conspiracy!
