A quick offer I am making to all deigners of free models to try and get them some protection... This is still open for discussion as I am not sure exactly how (or if) it will work.
As some of you know, I have opened a cardmodel shop. Keeping people from selling models that are given away for free is diffcult. If I sell any models that belong to a designer I become an authorized reseller and have a stake in the model sales. This gives me (and people I authroize to act on my behalf) leverage to act on models being sold on ebay or given away on pirate sites. Its difficult to get any kind of leverage on models that are purely given away for free... I would like to offer a free service to all designers. I call it EFDP - Ecardmodels Free Download Protection. Any designer that wants to aprticipate is welcome and it wont cost a penny. I would like to offer their downloads on my site for a fee - something low like 99 cents. I would imagine I will not sell a single one. At least I hope I dont as they are offered for free on the designers site. The .99 cent fee is tohelp offset the costs of hosting and bandwidth if anyone does happen to buy one of the models. If the designer also has paid models for sale with me they will get their share of the sale as usual. However if a designer is only having me host their free models then the profits would go purely towards the hosting fees. I dont plan on making anything from this but I want to offer it to help protect the designers intellectual properties. This of course does not change how they choose to share any of their models. Also keep in mind that adding these models to the shop would be a second priority to adding paid models. I am stretched pretty thin as it is... What do you guys think?
