Bob,

My sympathy for all the lost work, time, effort and emotion. I've had similar
happen.

Everyone has their favorite drives. I've had short ownership LaCie's die on me
yet I have another LaCie over 8 years od running great (though I admit to
having that one fully backed up-just incase).

Am surprised that none of the files could be recovered. I have yet to
completely loose everything from a drive.

Two questions, and they're not facetious - do you own a cat or small dog? And
if that's a "yes", do you shut down when not at the machine?

Subject: LaCie external HD

Back in 2006   there was lots of chatter from list members about discs having a
limited life, etc.   So   on 11/25/06 I purchased a LACIE 500GB D2 EXTREME USB
2.0 external hard drive recommended by a salesman at our local Mac store and
service center. For me the $343.72 cost was heavy compared to regularly buying
discs but it felt good having a heavy, all metal “library” to store   the Beta
models, monthly club meeting photos, creative writing efforts, tax info,
important e-mails, etc.

Last week 11/20/08 the Lacie external drive refused to appear on my desk top. I
disconnected, then reconnected the unit and a message appeared “could not read
disc insertion.” I took the
unit to the Mac sales and service center; days later I was told:

The hard drive is not mounting.

The hard drive is an unsupported format.

There is no data on the hard drive.

Service charge? Sixty dollars.

For those members who may have a Lacie the only tip off I am able to offer is
that I remember the Lacie was slow to respond the last two times I accessed
information before the unit died.

So folks, I spent $ 403.72 and lost all my work, research, and information for
the past two years.

My discs from 2002 are still working beautifully.
