John,

Nice work on the sub. Appreciate the write-up (as always).

It is a great little model that he designed-when I cam across it I couldn't
download it fast enough.

Your work and postings are always looked forward to.

Subject: [Papermodels II 33537] John Freeman's Photos--Deutsches U-Boot

Hi fellow addicts--

I just finished this model of a WWII German U-Boat. This model was
designed by Oliver "Olli" Bizer, who can be found on the German paper
model forum http://www.kartonmodell-forum.de/forum/index.php Olli
designed it at 1/262, so I enlarged it a bit to 1/250 to keep a
constant scale with my other small ships.

This is my second build of an Olli design. Paper model designers are a
wonderfully inventive lot, and Olli is no exception. The technique I
had not used before is Olli's frequent use of corrugated cardboard for
structural parts of the model. On this U-Boat, for instance, the
supporting structure of the hull is a slab of corrugated cardboard,
and the sides and deck are glued to it. Different--but obviously it
works. The other model of his that I have built is a racing sailing
yacht--I posted pictures of it to this list some time ago. The sailing
yacht uses the same technique with corrugated cardboard. My biggest
problem with this is the difficulty in finding cardboard of the
correct thickness. Likely what we get here in North America is
different from what is available in Europe.

The real genius of Olli, though, is his ability to simplify a model,
but still have it look right when finished--and for me, the look right
part is what matters. Years ago I belonged for a while to an Historic
Modelers Club. At the monthly meetings the fellas would spend hours
discussing if the exact curve of a cowling was right on a particular
model. Hey--it looked fine to me! So it is with Olli's models--a
purist may find fault with some detail, but look at this model and
tell me--did you have any trouble knowing what it is? All this, and he
frequently designs a diorama base to go with the model, as with this
one.

Thank you Olli--I'm looking forward to the Iowa Class Battleship that
you have almost completed!
