Basic Cardmodel Design Wayne McCullough uses TurboCAD & PaintShopPro (see: http://www.mylinuxisp.com/~wmccullough/PaperPanzers.html)
Jonathan Leslie, the owner of "The Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model Giftshop" uses MS Word Draw & PaintShopPro in his tutorial: ( http://jleslie48.com/faqs01.html ) Paper Model Design Workshop (http://www.wurlington-bros.com/Workshop/ photor.html) uses Adobe Illustrator to make a line drawing of a building, and then pastes photographs of the building on the line drawing. The Warmaster Buildings (http://www.brumbaer.de/Wm/Build/index.html) are made using Photoshop and AutoCAD. Erick's Models (http://www.ericksmodels.com/paper/step0.html) uses Pepakura Designer, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop and others. The common thread in these various methods is that one vector graphics program is used to make a line drawing of the cardmodel and then a raster graphics program is used to color the model. Vector graphics can be as simple as MS Word Draw or as complex as AutoCAD. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vector_graphics_editors Raster graphics can be as simple as MS Paint or as complex as Adobe Photoshop. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_raster_graphics_editors Basically, it is the same as drawing a cardmodel on paper. You make the line drawing first and color it afterwards. It might be better to start with the simple programs first because the complex programs require a long investment in time to become proficient. Don't turn up your nose at MS Word Draw & MS Paint. They are capable of making good drawings. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_draw_a_diagram_with_Microsoft_Word & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ms_Paint If you are already familiar with these programs, you can start designing simple models now. The free OpenOffice Draw program for the vector program & the free Gimp for the raster program would be a good place for a beginner to start.
