My friend, Jim, and I got into rocketry with a copy of a manual written
by Von Braun for his pre war rocket club. Great stuff, aluminum
construction, liquid fuel, and all the excitement that goes with it. You
know you are in trouble when the book starts by telling you how to build
a VERY sturdy blockhouse and to always keep your head down during
launches and to never never leave the blockhouse til the missile has
definitely landed.
It was exciting, it was fun, it educational, it was a miracle we
didn't get killed.
I have to admit we learned a LOT more from out failures (including a
good deal of first aid). I ended up in movies making space ships for the
screen while Jim ended up designing the real thing. Yes, indeed, model
building can really set a kid off on an interesting life.
