Ah that solution may not be the best despite all the hype. We use a LOT
of external HDs here. They allow portability and great security (just
lock them in the safe when not in use) but for every one in use there
are 2 duplicates locked up. Why? external or internal the one law of HDs
is they crash or otherwise fail and when they do it is no fun. (I have
all too much experience with that) I have learned to see HDs as a very
temporary storage medium and burn everything to DVDs or CDs and now use
BluRay for the big stuff. True even optical storage does degrade after
years but if you use reliable brands of media and copy it every 10 or so
years, there is no limit on how long the files will last (probably longer
than the systems to read them will)
You will be a LOT safer with optical storage than trusting HDs because
when (not if) those HDs fail you can smile and know you have lost very
little.

                                                                cat
