There is a lot of confusion about the OS MACs use (most of the
confusion purposely sowed by Apple itself) but the truth is MACs run a
Linux Variant. Apple hired the makers of BSD to modify their software to
form the then new "OS X". What BSD did was to combine elements from
their "Free BSD" and their paid version with a cute MAC styled GUI. This
OS was somewhat less able and stable than Linux or Unix but it was fine
for the "proprietary" OS Apple wanted. After all how could they claim
uniqueness if they ran a free OS? and if they were not really unique how
could they charge so much when they had no different hardware than a PC
and a free OS? Recent MACs can run real Linux, Windows, or even DOS, so,
aside from the great style of their cases, they are not at all limited
by their OS. Just set them up to dual boot and you can have the best of
both worlds.
