Well, your fingers are better at working on the small models than mine, Ha!
 
   No, the base didn't require and weight(s) and I was surprised too, but there 
is just enough offset in the angle of the tree that the bear is sitting on to 
make it stable.
 
     Good luck if you build it and be sure and post that LITTLE fella/gal....

     Nice!  Thank you for posting. That Koala model is tempting to print out 
half size..or smaller.  Was it necessary to add weight in the base?
