This will sound like a way-out-there solution, but you just might be surprised. Attach your mat to a flat board the same size. Park your car in a sunny place on a a sunny day with the windshield facing the sun and the windows closed. Put the mat and board on the dashboard behind the windshield. and leave through the heat of the day. The intense heat through the windshield should semi-heal the cuts and even out the board When removed and allowed to cool, the mat will be much less curly. WARNING!! Make SURE the mat is firmly attached to the board or you will have an even more deformed mat, or a puddle. And CAUTION the mat and board will become remarkably HOT! And even in one day the sun may cause some fading.
While I have not tried this technique on a well used cutting mat, I was able to successfully restore a new mat that my sister picked up for me and accidentally left on the dashboard while unloading her own many purchases that day. (Moral - buy your own craft supplies, we care much more about them than our siblings). The mat went from 1/4" flat to a 8" high twisted pile. But using the same forces that deformed it and attaching it to the flat board I restored 98% of the original flatness, (There was one little corner that just never would lay flat again but it was totally functional for several years.). The sun faded the mat from green to a blue-ish grey, but it was in the car two days in the Summer before brought to me. (and I did burn my hand slightly, removing the restored mat/plywood board from the dash). Good luck if you try this experiment.
