Good for you!  It is a good hobby.

Most of us use a toothpick to apply the glue to the tabs or areas that
glue should be applied to.  Some of us use lids off of small containers like
juice cans or bottle caps to hold a small amount of glue to keep the mess down.
Then using the toothpick, pick up a small amount of glue on the tip and smear
it in a thin coat. If more is needed just dip more on the toothpick.

Some models even have an Astrick or symbol like this * on the area where glue
should be applied.

Hope this helps answer your question and good luck and have fun!

Hello I am recently into making paper models and I have a problem
dealing with gluing.
Every time I try to glue and unfortunately I make mistakes, I
accidentally put excess glue on the part where it is not supposed to
touch the glue and I make discolored and smeared models. Any idea?
