Hello group,
I haven't mailed much in this group, lately.
However, I would like to share some info and advice with you.
Over the last few years I have read several stories about people who
lost their
posessions and/or software due to a computer crash, fire, or otherwise.
I regularly store my drawings on DVD's. And always on TWO disks, never
just on
one...!
My collection of disks is something to behold..... And as it grows,
old files become
harder and harder to find. And CD's and DVD's have a reputation to go
bad after a
few years. It may take just 5 years and sometimes much longer than 10
years, but
one day your PC just won't recognize the CD or the files. Even if you
DO store them
in a cool and dark place !
Personal experience has tought me that harddisks are a very good way
to store
information. Yes, they can crash too, but still I am convinced they
are the best way
(for me !) to store my 10 years of hard work. Not just for my
drawings, but for my vast
collection of pictures and drawings I found on the net, as well.
I feel a lot better now that I have stored everything on an external
harddisk. It's a
Western Digital, about 450 Gb. My own harddisk is about 160 Gb, so
this one will
be more than enough. It "only" costs about 80 euro's / 100 dollars.
Some people may
think this is a lot of money, but the loss of all of your files will
hurt a LOT more than
spending 100 dollars on more security.
So....be safe.....if you have a lot if info you would like to protect,
consider buying
an external - or internal - harddisk.
I always disconnect my external harddrive after use, so if anything
should happen to
my PC, all of my drawings will be safe.
Therefor my advice is, to consider trying to protect your precious
files, if you want to
keep them safe in the years to come...! I sleep a lot better knowing
I added another way
of storing my files.
Cheers,
Erik.
