The boats had the V-12 Merlin and Allison engines. I worked in the
pits at the Dixie Cup Regatta a few times before they quit having the
unlimited boats on Lake Guntersville, Alabama. That was just about
the time Atlas Van Lines then Budweiser went to turbines. Chrysler
had a smaller boat, "Chrysler Crew" that was just becoming competitive
with dual Hemi V-8's. I also watch the Hustler set the water speed
record 1969-70? On the first run they lost the rudder and ended up in
the picnic area of the resort where I was the lifeguard. Fortunately,
he missed the trees and the grass didn't hurt the boat. The set the
record the next day and had the boat on display at a 45 degree cant
for weeks. Last I heard a fellow in Oz put an afterburner on an old
military jet engine and currently holds the record, but I haven't kept
track. Like most Aussie's I have me (mostly helicopter pilots) he was
about a crazy as the rest of us flying fling wings. The wife is
moving me to Denton, TX next week. I hope to see the WWII glider
museum in Lubbock, TX. We currently see WWII aircraft on a regular
basis flying into the nearby Double Eagle Airport. The radials and
V-12's are distinct. This is the training base for the CV-22's so we
see a lot of them also. I had hoped to get down and take some photos,
but being home bound is a real pain. They are only about 18 miles
away, but just never well enough to go down.
