I also agree. I have an outside hard drive connected to my computer through
a USB port. It is set up to automatically back up everything. This copying
takes place every time I shut down the computer.

So if the computer crashes and I lose everything on the hard drive, I have
it all backed up onto this outside hard drive. Thus I may lose only what
happened in the current operating session.

These outside hard drives do not cost very much, and the current one I have
has 500 gigabytes of memory and cost me well under a hundred dollars. That
is the cheapest insurance I have ever seen. Of course I am running Windows.
People who have Macs think nothing will ever happen to their machines so
there is nothing to say to them. :-)

I side with Mandy on this one. It's also faster and safer to back it up on
your own equipment.
Also, if you're the type of person who doesn't regularly back up, you won't
do it just because it's available on the "cloud".
God, take control of your own destiny.

Personally, I don't get how people are ok with putting all their private
data on a big corporations hard drive and thinking that it's not being
watched.. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it's just a little bit
frightening. Also, it's frighteningly slow to upload and download, and could
just all disappear in a hackers eyeblink. :s Corporations need documents and
lawyers to set up backup drives in third party places, with security
clearances etc and red tape. Who's to say that some hacker isn't a member
and once they have limited access, the next step is a simple one to get full
access to everyone else. (I can hack your computer once you let me get my
hands on the attached keyboard.... mwa ha ha)

I'll keep it all close to my chest, thanks. ;) Cloud is just big brother in
sheeps clothing.

If you have an account with Amazon, they will give you 5GB of internet
disk space to use as you like, You can't transfer whole disk trees,
but you can with control A select all the files of a directory and
upload them in one shot. Single file size limit is a generous 2GB.
Sure beats a memory stick for transferring just a few files.

I agree 100%. I was fortunate to be able to get a new 1.5 TB external HD
cheap, and that's where I keep all the important stuff. These days you can
never be too careful.

OK then, never mind.

anyway, I found a whole bunch of models I liked during lunch and was able to
upload them to the cloud drive so I could get them at home tonight worked
great.

My reason for keeping my data onsite is the crashing problem -- the
system between them and me can go down. The Cloud is not immune to
failing, though it may take more effort. And as the earthquake in Japan
has shown, How big an earthquake or tsunami is it reasonable to plan for?

Of course, if you add humans (honest or not), Stuff Will Happen. At
least at home, I know which idiot caused or failed to prevent problem
(some folks say she looks a lot like me).

I don't use any online service, to store my stuff, I to have trust issues. I
store it at home, on HDD and CD/DVD.

However next time I travel, I will be backing up my photos to my website,
as I have unlimited storage with the plan I have. I am starting to sell my
prints, so this seems like good cheap insurance and being a hosted site,
they have a reason to stay up and running.

guess I'm just the trusting type. I got more stuff online that I could
ever count. I'm more worried about loosing it than someone finding it.
good luck finding stuff in the 100's of GB's I have online.

Always hide the good stuff in a mess. Best place for something you don't
want found.

I'd never keep the key to my safety deposit box in my home safe, its taped
to the inside cover of one of the books on my library shelf.

I've never thought twice about work. They don't even need a reason to fire
me if they want too. I even tell the boss I ran out of space on my computer
so I had to use his hard disk for my cindy crawford collection.

Read the fineprint for Dropbox...it says that when you agree to the
terms they can allow ANY 3rd party THEY like have access to your
files....not good enough for this little Black Duck.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the quality of print
between the Canon and the Brother?

androidlove <[email protected]> Mar 30 11:45PM -0700 ^ <>

"There are two abilities that Canon PIXMA multifunction printers have
that Brother MFC multifunction printers do not have, however. One is
that Canon PIXMA multifunction printers can print in a speedy pace.
The other is that their print output is stellar in quality."

Now I'm thinking I should go for the Canon. I can't sacrifice quality.

Canon. No doubt, Canon.
I have had just about every maker and Canon has been the most reliable
hands down (Lexmark gave us all fits). Canon also has great sharpness
(Brother is on the blurry side). Only the Epson super high end
professional printers can do it better but, oh, are they expensive.
Canon ink is about average and they will accept the aftermarket inks
(Kodak and Lexmark both drink Ink like my Uncle drank Gin)
All my shop printers and even my home printer have been Canon. They
also make great cameras and have wonderful Customer Service.

I had the same issues with Vista and just loved my scanner and did not
want to change a piece of equipment that was perfectly good.

I found this and now swear by it, It is a different interface that we
are sued to, but enable my scanner to work perfectly.

So you have another alternative...

I also bought this guys software VuePrint back in late 1990's just for using
as a picture viewer / manipulator. He later added the Vue Scan part.

It has worked well for me over the years and through multiple different OS
version.

I have had extremely good use from "low end" Epson printers,
a couple printers and an all-in-one over the decade.
Clone ink cartridges working well
and a less than successful HP printer sitting in the corner.
They use ink like my uncle Teatotaler drinks gin.
