Bob Williams sent a reply that seems to be it. The main points of the reply indicates that the film is "Battle Cry" from 1955 where a Marine in a New Zealand pub is telling a story about Japanese soldiers surrounding him and when asked "What happened next, Yank?" replies "I was killed of course."
So either that is the movie I recall or there was another one made later that borrowed that scene or some movies were combined in the memory banks. Ain't memories great when they get all muddled up together? I will check out "Hanover Street" to see if something similar is in it.
