I keep a slipstone handy while I'm modelling. It's a wedge shaped fine whetstone about four inches long that I bought at my local tools and hardware store.
I use it with a drop of spit to hone my craft knife blades as I use them. I find it a lot easier to keep a blade sharp than to replace it. I've been using the same scalpel blade for the last six months!
