Forgive me if these are known already to the old hands here. After
having rewatched the entire 7 seasons of Next Generation I thought it
would be nice to build the Enterprise D. I picked Mr nNnjatoes' to
build since it is a reasonable size and not too difficult. One of the
problems I've always had with tab models is the inevitable overlap you
see with this type of build. In a previous post I mentioned a way to
lessen the effect by using a burnishing tool on the back of the joined
parts to bring them to level on the front side, see saucer1.jpg, but
one persistent problem with his is the harsh black line that always is
noticeable at the join.
To get around this, and with the Enterprise, it's really noticeable
because of the light blue colour, what I did was to cut on the inside
of the line of the parts rather than on the line or outside the line.
this left a white paper edge and no coloured black line on the outside
edge of the parts. When the parts are glued and then burnished from
the back the join is almost unable to be seen from a distance. I've
included a shot from Mr Ninjatoes' picassa albums on this effect.
The other problem I had is that much of this kit has alternate tabs,
that is tabs on both parts to be joined that interlock. Understandable
that this type of kit has that method, it's the only way to idiotproof
the parts so everyone knows exactly where they go. Trouble is that
it's really difficult to get a join that isn't lumpy. I got around
this to a degree by scoring the tabs on the inside of the dotted line
rather than on the dotted line. This seems to have smoothed out the
joins pretty well.
the only other issue I've had so far with this model is that after
almost completing the lower star drive section I dropped it on the
floor and rolled the chair back to pick it up and steam rollered the
whole unit...oh well only 4 hours work....

Thanks! I'll be trying these soon.
A chess knight by Steven Marshall (Homespun Magixx) uses alternating
tabs along the horses crown. I found that cutting the edge of the tab a
tiny bit beyond the black outline made smoothing the alternating tabs a
lot easier.
I really like seeing advice and methods posted.
Thanks again.
