Is it possible that this is a fault of Mac OSX or your pdf reader? I'm working
in information
techs and discovered a lot of problems since the migrations of Mac OSX to
version 10.9 Maverick.
I am using Gentoo Linux and had no problems opening the files with the
well-known password. My pdf
reader is Evince so you my give another reader a try.
