After landing in Cape Town from UK in 1968 we started a journey of about 1 500km to Welkom in the Orange Free State (look it up) in a Kombi. It included an overnight run of 950km (actually longer because my uncle took a "shortcut" of many hours which left us about 5km up the road).
It was a damned uncomfortable trip as the seats were not very well upholstered, but it left an indelible memory. The Kombi also had a dent in the front as shortly before my uncle had an accident when he collided with a buck. Also a strong memory.
