A GROUP of people have been to two pubs in the Dispatch district in search of
spirits - but not whisky, brandy or gin.

Mind you, a stiff drink might well have been called for at the end of it all
because they were an investigation team from the Ghosts Of Nottingham group.
Mainstays of the group are trainee medium Pam Brown and her husband, Terry, who
live in Hucknall, and Andy Bond, of Bulwell.
Ghosts Of Nottingham investigates anything paranormal and uses equipment like
video cameras and tape recorders, as well as the communication method of
keeping fingers on an upturned glass.
The two local pubs it has focused on are the Seven Stars in Hucknall and the
Lion Revived in Bulwell.
Seven Stars manager David Coxon said there had been one or two strange
happenings at the pub.
One night a member of the bar staff, Julie Birch, was locking up and felt
somebody touch her shoulder when no-one else was there.
The group thinks hauntings might arise partly from the pub having been used by
World War Two servicemen killed when the house next door, where they were
billeted, was bombed.
A report by Ghosts Of Nottingham about a visit to the pub by a team of nine one
night makes for a somewhat spine-chilling read.
It claims that a male presence was felt in the living quarters and that a
mirror propped against a wall mysteriously moved in the dark.
"In one of the front bedrooms," the report goes on, "the mediums saw an old
lady staring out of the window, wearing old-style clothes and with her hair in
a bun.
"It was felt she was no threat and they had a feeling the area may once have
been used as some sort of brothel and she was the madam."
Another bedroom had "a World War Two feeling about it" and the investigators
claimed that sparkly lights were seen moving about the room. There was "a very
friendly dog presence so strong you felt you could stroke it".
But the report claims that the most impressive evidence of the night was when a
candle flame moved in response to questions asked and "went crazy" when
something was said which it did not like.
Pam said: "We are still working on the history of the Seven Stars and would
like to hear from anyone who can help."
At the Lion Revived, which is the Ghosts Of Nottingham headquarters, licensee
Tony Thorpe said the pub was originally known as the Bulwell Spring and the
oldest part was a former stable, dating from the early 1700s.
Tony said his wife, Mandy, had once seen an apparition - "an old guy with a cap
on in a corner, staring at her".
Pam has been to a spiritualist group as part of her training as a medium. Other
places the group has investigated include Nottingham's Galleries Of Justice
museum twice, the city's Salutation pub with trance medium Karl Windridge, and
Newstead Abbey, with its 'White Lady' legend.
Andy confessed: "I have not seen a ghost myself but I am always on the lookout
for something to happen."
The group currently wishes to recruit someone who has an interest in
researching the history of buildings and would like to be part of a friendly
team as a spare-time pursuit.
Anyone interested is asked to contact Pam on 0115 9539889.
