Ghost research investigates Gloucester Township
By: Drew Ciccotelli, Correspondent11/03/2005

The Gabriel Davies Tavern, a historical landmark
located in Glendora, is also a focal point for local
paranormal activity.
The tavern, built in 1756, served as an inn for
shippers using the Big Timber Creek to transport their
products to Philadelphia.
During the Revolutionary War, the house was called the
Hillman Hospital House, which served as a caring place
for injured soldiers serving under George Washington.
On Friday, Oct. 28, new "life" was given to the lone
tavern in a highly developed area. This new life
comes, ironically, from the searching for the dead.
Ghost walks are a frequent event during the Halloween
season, but the Gabriel Davies Tavern offers people
with a deeper more imaginative view of the paranormal.
Dave Juliano, director of South Jersey Ghost Research,
along with Crystal Yankasky as well as a host of other
members are exploring the tavern in search for the
unexplained and the hard to believe.
The hunt, in its sixth year, has been a continued
investigation into the unknown happenings of the
tavern.
Founded in 1955, the SJGR is celebrating its 50th year
searching for ghosts who dwell within the walls of not
just historic houses, but also that of private
citizens throughout the area.
In doing this, Juliano and his team are able to
compare results from the known haunted house to the
private houses, which are relatively unknown. They are
searching for ghosts but not in the same way the
movies might have show people.
"Our job is mainly surveillance," Juliano said. "We
simply wait until something happens. It's just right
place, right time, most of the time. When you're not
trying to find stuff, it finds you."
The reason for choosing the Gabriel Davies Tavern was
to give people who are interested in the tavern a
chance to come out and see something they normally
wouldn't see.
This is also done to take the mystery out of the
unknown and make people more comfortable with the
paranormal happenings in their local area.
Aside from the ghost exploration, another community
group is using the tavern to further their fundraising
needs. The Historic and Scenic Preservation Society
organized the entire ghost hunt as a way to raise
money to get their history research published.
Joanne Carr, president of the society, believes that
Friday night's fundraiser was a success and that they
achieved their goal. Both groups worked hand in hand
to get this event together.
"They (SJGR) deal with the ghosts, and we're here to
deal with the historic aspect of the tavern," Carr
said.
At the event, boy scouts from local Troop 89 set up a
camp fire for people attending. There were
refreshments and coloring books for kids.
Carr told ghost stories, kids roasted marshmallows by
the fire and local kids played in the small light
pockets around the tavern. It seemed to bring a
community together, even on small scale.
As Carr looked around in between reading her ghosts
stories, she found the moment to be truly captivating.
"Its like you're in a Norman Rockwell picture," she
said. "Everyone's doing something. It's wonderful."
