Have you been able to check archives of the newspapers in Edinburgh for obituaries from the days following the boy's death and the birth announcements for the days following his birth? It doesn't look like the online archives for the Edinburgh papers go back that far, but a reference librarian or possibly someone on this list may be able to help you get that information.
While poking around online to see if I can find any other resources for you, I did come up with something that might be useful to other people. There are online newspaper archive services like www.newspaperarchive.com which have more online than the individual newspapers have in their own online archives. They had newspapers archived from as far back as the the 1700's (!), but I didn't see any that they had from Edinburgh covering the 1980's and 90's. Anyway, good luck! Once you are able to get obituary information on him, tracking down his folks should be relatively easy unless they have a very common name.
