Christian,

How is it failing?  Does it crash?  Does it give an error?  Does it open a 
bunch of windows where it shouldn't be?

What version of ParaView are you using?

You may want to try using the env program to set the display to see if that 
helps.

 mpirun -np 1 /bin/env DISPLAY=:0.0 ./pvserver : -np 1 ...

 but xclock -display :0.1   works  .
