Developing a new fully featured reader is a lot of work as well.

The VisIt team will in their next major release be building with CMake, updating to the current version of VTK and a host of other improvements including cleaning up the link time dependencies between their shared objects. All of which should go a long way to simplify the situation.

At least you have options...
