Ben, I use paraview for converting files quite often. See this for setting up your environment: http://www.paraview.org/Wiki/Getting_Started And this is an example of how to do a conversion. http://www.paraview.org/Wiki/Convert_a_File_from_PLY_to_VTP I have not worked with STL as you suggested, I usually use PLY to go between formats, but we may be using different types of data.
