This is intentional. 64 bit ids are mainly useful for processing really large structured datasets in a non-distributed way. Otherwise, they are unnecessary but cause all data structures used to represent unstructured data to bloat. Ideally, I would like to see this change such that ids can be on 32 bit or 64 bit on a dataset to dataset basis.
