Our data is in the EnSight-Gold file format and we haven't encountered any problems with 3.8. Have you tried the ensight format checkers http://www.paraview.org/pipermail/paraview/2010-March/016356.html?
You could also try replacing one of the files that loads correctly with an appropriately named pressure file.
