I added your suggestion (and tried the other extent member functions) but it had no effect. However, if I merge blocks so I'm left with a vtkStructuredGrid, rather than a vtkMultiBlockDataSet containing a vtkStructuredGrid, I can see the mesh. I'll keep trying with it.
