Related to the latter case (3D scene with static content), I had good luck with converting an X3D scene exported from ParaView into U3D using Meshlab (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/) and then embedding U3D into a PDF document. Something similar should be doable with Powerpoint I'd think.
