using pv 3.12 I cannot save state files correctly, and generation of
coprocessing scripts also fails because somehow - non ascii (UTF-8) --
characters are getting into strings.

The index 3 should read "bfield" - but instead comes out as above.
I suspect this is an issue caused by Qt. Has anyone else had this problem, and
if so, what was the correct (or fastest) fix. The reason I suspect Qt is
because any calls to qString::ToStdString() in my code always fail and I have
to use toLatin or something and I suspect I've compiled Qt with a wrong option.
