Paraview 3.12 doesn't let me check the "Compute Scalars" box, it is
grayed out, in some circumstances.
Sources/Wavelet
FIlters/Clip
Filter/Contour
The above sequence will give you the situation I am talking
about. Version 3.10 of Paraview and earlier let you compute
scalars. If you can't, then you can't color by the scalar value
(this is useful in the case of multiple contours).
