If your system is actually 64 bit then I cannot understand why you are getting the "cannot execute binary file" error. Please can you post the output from the following two commands?:
uname -a ldd /home/stephen/ParaView-4.1.0-Linux-64bit/bin/paraview Also, which version of Ubuntu are you using?
