Hi Mathieu,
no - not connected to a server - just the GUI version without. However
- seems the user settings! With "-dr" it works. I will try what happens
when i delete my user-preferences for v5.3 ...

Can you try to reproduce your problem by running paraview without user
settings:
./bin/paraview -dr
