Hi Michael, I just tried here and I can open ParaView-5.5.2-Qt5-MPI-OSX10.8-64bit.dmg (downloaded from the ParaView website) on my 10.11 (El Capitan) machine. Also, the machine that makes the unsigned dmgs is only 10.12 so it shouldn't default to APFS. I'm not sure about the machine used to sign the signed binaries though.
