A very good task. It PASSes 'make test' on both Linux/i386 and Darwin/PPC with my normal configuration choices. It FAILed 'make manifest_tests' at the same places that master was also failing. I believe I have fixed MANIFEST and .gitignore as needed in both branch and master. I haven't yet tried various combinations of g++ and optimize.
