#581: make segfaults with PGE.pbc on fedora (r38365)

 Well, title says almost all. After a successful perl Configure.pl, make
 segfaults when building PGE.pbc. I have seen other tickets with this
 problem, but all are marked 'fixed, patch included in following
 revisions'. Yet it happened again.
