I'm not going to touch this ticket for now. The threading system is both
known to be broken in various ways, and is undergoing a redesign. The
behavior in die_from_exception() is probably very bad, but it isn't being
used and there aren't any error reports from it so I think we can let
sleeping dogs lay until we are ready to deal with it.
